It's all systems go for Paul Treu and his Springbok Sevens team as they prepare to win the ever-popular George-tournament – the second leg of the International Rugby Board's Sevens Series – for the first time ever.
The Blits Bokke, disguised as the South African Vipers, returned from Singapore early in November, where they successfully defended their title as champions of the annual Singapore Cricket Club's Sevens tournament.
With the help from sponsor Sasol, Treu uses this tournament in South East Asia, one of the oldest in the world, as warm-up for the IRB tournaments in Dubai and George, regarded by most of the players on the IRB circuit as one of their favourites. What makes this year's tournament in the Southern Cape even more special is the fact that it is the 10th year South Africa will play host to one of the big tournaments, since the IRB started with this initiative way back in 1999.
Even though the Vipers included a few new faces in their team, they still did very well, conceding just two tries – 10 points – in their seven games.
Treu was very happy with his team's performance afterwards, although the opposition in Singapore can't really be compared with the brilliant players that will be in action for, amongst others, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Kenya in George.
"I'm very glad that we managed to defend our title in Singapore.. It was a good weekend of sevens rugby," said Treu.
"What almost pleases me more, though, is the fact that we defended very well. The new boys also slotted in very well, in particular guys like Shaun Venter of the Pumas and Kyle Brown, who played for the University of Cape Town this year.
"The older guys also proved yet again that experience is something you can't buy. It's difficult to single out one player who did well, but if I have to, I'd have to say Renfred Dazel played brilliantly."
Treu has not made up his mind about the composition of his team, but it can be expected – fitness and injury permitting, of course – that the Blits Bokke will include experienced sevens stars like Dazel, Mzwandile Stick, Schalk van der Merwe, Marius Schoeman, Vuyo Zangqa, Mpho Mbiyozo, Frankie Horne and the captain, Neil Powell.
Powell and his men will take part in the very popular Sasol Springbok Sevens Signing Session, where the public can meet their heroes before the tournament. This will take place at the Garden Route Mall on Wednesday, 3 December at 12pm. Proud team sponsor, Sasol, encourages all fans to get down to the signing session and support the Blitz Bokke in the home-leg of the IRB series commencing on Friday 5 December.

MORE PAST EVENTS AT GARDEN ROUTE MALL

Garden Route Mall wil F.A.
